By remaining curious and open to new experiences, Karolina eventually found her home in chemical engineering, but not before uncovering the big secret. The Big Secret: It's Okay Not to Know
What Does the Oil and Gas Industry Do?
Being the Only Girl in the Room
Click below to hear Karolina talk about being the only girl in the room: "If you have opinions, and you do, you have a lot of power in your hands. It doesn't matter if you are the only girl in the room. Make sure that you are good at what you do, and then being a girl doesn't really matter- actually, it could be a good thing." Do I Have to Pick Just One Thing? How does a girl who loved everything growing up pick just one thing to do for the rest of her life? Guess what: she doesn't choose. Karolina never left her love of music and theatre. In fact, she recently starred in a Greek play with the Hellenic Professional Society. As for her favorite dance moves, Karolina prefers the Greek dances she learned growing up, much like this one: How Do I Choose? Stay Curious
Karolina's advice is to stay curious and explore the world around you. She explains that physics and STEM are the foundation for everything we do, like dancing, walking, and speaking. According to Karolina, being curious, asking, and understanding will take you a long way. Think About ItComment below and tell me whether or not you know what you want to be when you grow up. Any answer is okay! Did it make you feel better to hear Karolina said that she didn't know when she was your age? Click below to watch the full interview with Karolina:

Feedstock is a mix of products taken from the crude oil that will then be processed, or mixed, again to make a different component. You can think of feedstock like baking a cake: first, we combine the dry ingredients like flour, baking powder, and sugar. You can think of the dry ingredient mix like crude oil feedstock. Next, you would mix the wet ingredients, like eggs and milk- this would be another type of feedstock. Put together, the dry and wet ingredients would make cake batter that can be baked to create a cake. At an oil refinery, the mix of feedstock creates products that we can use, like the gas or diesel in our cars, base oil, the bulk ingredient in lubricants like engine oils, and the fuel in our airplanes. In Her Own WordsClick below to hear Kaelie talk about what a refinery does: Her View From the OfficeKaelie's workspace doesn't look like the average workplace. She spends a lot of her time directly on the refinery. Check out the picture of the refinery, below. What do you see? Dancing Roots

Do You Like Asking Questions? You're a Researcher!
Doctors can do art, too!Dr. Angeles-Han teaches us that you don't have to limit yourself to one thing you do for the rest of your life! That could be quite boring. She likes to include art in her life in many different ways, through her children, and through baking! There are lots of ways she incorporates art in her life. Try some of these yourself:

A Path Less Traveled
When you try new things, give it your 100%- if it doesn't work out, that's okay! Failing is not a bad thing, but not trying your best is. You can always make a change, but you won't know if you really like it or not without trying first! Inventing Her Own Path
Think About ItWhat data, or facts, you use to decide what to play on the playground at recess. Do you see what is empty? Do you ask your friends what they want to do? Do you have a favorite that you always go to first? How do you use this data? To watch the full episode with Sue, click below:
Have you ever been in a situation that made you feel a little lonely? Maybe you liked something that your friends thought was weird, or maybe you were the only girl who wanted to play with Legos instead of dolls? It can be tough when we stand out from our friends, and it can be lonely. But it doesn't have to be. Our differences are what make us special. The things that set you apart are the things that make you unique- these are your strengths! Click below to listen to Stephanie talk about a time when she felt scared from being the only girl in the room, and how she learned to use it as her strength: Why Fit In When You Were Born to Stand Out?
Find Your Girl Power
"Everyone is looking for the next big thing... but I’m the one actually enabling you to do that. I fill your car... your widgets that you're creating- I’m the one that's producing energy for it. It’s nice to be needed. Engineering is a cool industry." Just Go For It
Team MascotWhen she's not at work, Stephanie enjoys hanging out with her dog, Bruce- who also rocks a hard hat from time to time! Stephanie also loves dancing with her friends. She even treated me to a mini dance party in the Cool Chicks Club. Think About ItComment below 3 things that make you feel powerful! Click below to watch the full interview with Stephanie:
Michelle talked passionately about how math can be seen in the art of nature, describing how nature is full of patterns, and these patterns can all be explained with math. Click below to hear more about how Michelle sees math in art. Finding Math in the Day to Day
This ability to make sense of art by using STEM lead her to pursue a career in the STEM fields. Michelle loves that STEM allows her to be creative by using math and science to find new ways to solve problems. Click below to hear Michelle describe why she loves STEM. Using STEM to be Creative
Although Michelle is now the General Manager of Digital Innovations and Technology at Chevron, a leading STEM corporation in the oil and gas industry, in a sense she did accomplish her childhood dream of being an artist. Every day Michelle gets to look at the exciting new technology that others have created. This technology inspires Michelle to think of new ways for Chevron to meet their goals. This is the purpose of art: to inspire, excite, and lead others to create. Word to the Wise: Do it All!Michelle continues to paint and draw today- mostly with colored pencils and paints. She is passionate about both STEM and art, and sees them to be forever interconnected. When asked what advice she had for younger students, she simply said, "Do it all." Click below to hear more.
Think About ItDraw your own picture of somewhere you see math in the world. This can be in flowers, animals, buildings, a sport, anything! You can use Michelle's drawing of nature, below, as an example. Click below to watch the full interview with Michelle: What do mice and the human brain have in common? Turns out, lots! The mouse brain is actually very similar to the human brain. Because of this, scientists can study mice to learn more about the human brain. Dr. Melanie Samuel, Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, is one of these scientists. Melanie's research lab studies the mouse retina (eye) to understand how our brains make us who we are. She studies how the cells in our brains talk to each other.
Animal research is extremely important to science. Without animals, scientists couldn't do the important work of scientific discovery. Mice help scientists make important discoveries that help people. Mice are the heroes of science!
Through the experiment, she was able to see the DNA from the cell. Melanie suddenly understood the beauty of the cells in our body. Every cell in our body has the same genetic information, yet they have totally different functions. Melanie became fascinated with exploring what makes us human through science and biology. She sees science as the most comprehensive way to give back to humanity because one discovery can impact millions of people. According to Melanie, STEM careers are a way to give back to the world. "With STEM careers, you really have the opportunity to give back to the world and maybe even the universe in a way that's super powerful." Believe in Yourself: You Can Do This According to Melanie, anybody can do a job in STEM. She says that you just have to have a passion for STEM and be willing to work hard, and then you can accomplish anything. Melanie admits that sometimes people in our lives tell us that we can't do things, or aren't good enough. That can be really hard to hear, especially when it comes from people that we love, like our friends, family, and teachers. She remembers being told by one of her teachers that she wasn't good at math. This hurt her feelings for awhile, but eventually she realized that her teacher was wrong. Melanie is good at math, and she's great at a lot of other things that are also important to her job. Melanie's job, and many other jobs in STEM, require lots of different skills. You don't have to be perfect at any one thing to be perfectly ready for a job in STEM. Instead, focus on working hard at what you are passionate about. This will make you perfect for a job in STEM.
